When I gradually regained consciousness, I found myself in the passenger seat of a moving vehicle. I was overcome with shock when I realized I was inside a very familiar luxury Maybach. Only one person I knew owned such a rare and expensive car.

With anxiety in my chest, I peered over, and sure enough, there was William in the driver's seat. He drove with a cold expression, refusing to look at me while I sat there silently.

Despite the whipping wind outside my window I was surprised to find that I was pleasantly warm. Upon glancing down, I realized I was wrapped in a warm blanket. Did William put this over me?

A mix of emotions swirled within me, but ruling among them was confusion. "Why are you here?" I croaked, my voice weak from sleep. "Did you come to save me?"

William's chuckle was dry and full of contempt. "You think I came on purpose? Don't flatter yourself."

"You didn't come on purpose?" Did I hear him correctly? "William, we live in the exact opposite directions. You expect me to believe you just came by?"

A scathing glare was tossed my way. "I was on my way to pick up George," William replied. curtly. "He was being watched after by my parents, but because of the weather, they're letting him stay there. I 'came by' your house while on my way back, so you should thank George you're safe and sound. He basically saved your life."

Just the mention of little George saving me pained my heart. William always knew just what to say to hurt me, even if it meant digging into a fresh wound. Our precious baby was lost not too long ago, and yet here he was, telling me I should be thanking the baby of his mistress.

"I would have been fine without you," I muttered scornfully. "I didn't need your help."

My words finally got William to glance my way, his gaze utterly incredulous. "Is that so? If you were really independent enough, you would actually rent a house without security. risks and watch the weather forecast!"

My glare was cold and full of spite. How did he know so much about the house? Hell, how did he even know where I lived in the first place? "You seem to know a lot about where I live, William," I noted with suspicion.

"Don't get me wrong, I don't care about you that much," he sneered. "That' neighborhood is infamous for its security issues. Burglaries, floods, hurricanes; it's a hazard just living there. I didn't expect you to be foolish enough to live in a dump like that."

His lack of empathy sent anger coursing through my veins. How dare he judge me when he

had been the cause of my struggles? "It's cheap, William!" I argued with my voice raised. "I've told you multiple times that I'm facing financial issues! What part of that don't you understand?"

My outburst had William's face twisting with surprise. Any callous argument he had died on his lips, and when he finally managed a response, he changed topics.

"You'll be staying in my place until you find a safer place to live," he announced emotionlessly. "As my ex-wife, of course. I just don't need other people seeing my ex live such a miserable life. It's humiliating."

Shock struck me like the lightning that thundered outside. His tone was smug, fully knowing the shame I would feel at being dependent once again on my cheating ex-husband. He thought I was just going to hang onto him for everything, didn't he? I didn't want to be a weak woman who needed everything done for her by this disgusting man.

"Stop the car," I ordered stiffly. "I don't need your help. I want to get out of here and I want you out of my life."

"No," he replied, his voice like iron. With a push of a button, he cruelly locked all the car doors, preventing me from leaving.

Desperate to leave, I frantically yanked at one of the doors, but it stood firm. "William!" I scolded. Did he really think he could just keep me prisoner? "Let me out! I don't want to go to your awful house!"

William seemed offended by my response, but he swallowed whatever scathing insult had risen in his throat. "You're in no position to negotiate with me, Caroline," he replied, gripping the steering wheel tightly. "Laden will be coming over once you're all settled." "Laden?" The name felt familiar on my tongue and left a bad taste in my mouth. "Your friend whose family runs the local hospital? Why is he coming over?"

"To check up on you," William replied smoothly. "There's obviously something up with your health, so he's bringing a doctor to do a quick physical examination. I'd like to see what's wrong with you.

My face paled in response as a rush of unease ran down my spine. William knew that I sick in some way, and now he was trying to prove it. What would he do if he found out
