Chapter 1544
Ben felt Jamie's reaction as her fingers curled tightly around his neck, and the corner of his mouth lifted into a faint, amused smile.
"Even this sick, you're still subconsciously trying to seduce me?"
Jamie flushed a deep red, coughing in a mix of embarrassment and frustration, but no words came to her defense.
"I'm joking," Ben said casually, his tone completely unaffected, as if his teasing was just an afterthought. He grabbed a chair and sat by the bedside. Jamie, recovering from her coughing fit, quickly changed the subject. "Why does it feel like I'm so much worse this time? What's wrong with me?" Ben answered calmly, "The test results aren't back yet."
She nodded slightly, choosing not to press further. Clearing her throat, she felt a sudden thirst rise but hesitated to ask for help. Before she could act, Ben handed her a glass of warm water without a word.
The simple gesture sent a fleeting warmth through her chest, one that she quickly suppressed. She couldn't let herself get caught up in feelings that had no place in their fractured relationship.
"Am I really so terrifying in your mind?" Ben's voice cut through her thoughts. His sharp gaze bore into her. "Even in your nightmares, it's me?"
"No," Jamie replied hesitantly, struggling to find the right words. "It's just..." She trailed off, unable to explain.
Ben let out a low laugh, his eyes gleaming with irony. "Get some rest," he said before leaving the room.
In his own space, he flipped through a stack of legal documents. Lately, work had piled up, but even as he tried to focus, his mind wandered back to Jamie. After an hour, unable to shake his unease, he tiptoed back to her room.
She was asleep this time, her face peaceful and free from the torment of earlier nightmares. Ben reached out instinctively to check her temperature, but before his hand made contact, Jamie's fingers wrapped around his. "Don't go..." she murmured, her voice soft and childlike.
Ben froze, the tenderness of the
moment catching him off guard. His chest tightened as he looked at her sleeping face, so vulnerable and reminiscent of the woman he once loved deeply. He stayed by her side through the night, unable to bring himself to leave.
When dawn broke, the sunlight streamed through the curtains, waking Jamie. The warmth in her hand lingered as if someone had been there with her all night. Ske glanced at her hand, smiled faintly, and shook her head.
Just her imagination, she thought.

Later that day, Ben arrived at the designated meeting spot. He leaned casually against his car, waiting, his expression unreadable.
Moments later, Winnie's car pulled up. As she stepped out, Ben's eyes scanned the vehicle behind her.
"Where's Charlie?" he asked, his tone clipped.
Winnie clutched her abdomen, as if
she could still feel the warmth of the child who had once been there
sted with the icy indifference
of his biological father.
"It's been so long since we last met, and you don't even ask how I'm doing?" she said bitterly. "You only care about that child?"
"I've already made everything clear to you," Ben said, his icy gaze fixed on her. "There's nothing between us."
Winnie's mind replayed that nightmare of a night, the haunting video, and the devastation it brought.
Her voice cracked as she screamed in anguish, "That's all a lie! You're just trying to dodge responsibility! Ben, why are you doing this?"
Seeing her on the verge of collapse, Ben let out a deep breath. "Winnie, I've already given you the truth you wanted. Where is Charlie?"
Winnie felt a wave of cold sweep through her chest. She had poured every ounce of emotion into this man, and all she got in return was apathy and impatience.
A bitter smile formed on her lips as she answered, "Charlie? He's dead!"
