Chapter 1647
Fortunately, Charlie didn't resist the idea, which was a relief for both Jamie and Ben.
With that weight lifted off her shoulders, Jamie finally made up her mind and told Ben her decision later that same day.
The moment she said yes, Ben cupped the back of her head and kissed her deeply. It was a long time before he let her go, his forehead pressed against hers as he whispered, breathless, "Finally, Jamie. You've agreed to marry me. "Do you know how long I've been waiting for this day?"
Hearing the slight tremble in his voice, Jamie couldn't help but feel a pang of sympathy for him.
But it wasn't just him who had struggled. When Jamie made the painful decision to leave all those years ago, it had taken her months of inner turmoil to sever her feelings.
Thankfully, after all these years, they had finally found their way back to each other.
They decided to hold a wedding and informed Ben's mother first. Mrs. Lucas didn't seem particularly surprised. Instead, she jokingly complained that Ben had waited too long, even questioning whether he lacked the charm to win a woman over sooner. As for Jamie's parents, her father had passed away, and Linda was still unwell. But Jamie felt it was important to tell her personally.
"Mom, I have some good news," Jamie said with a bright smile. "I'm getting married."
Linda didn't quite understand what "getting married" meant, but seeing Jamie's happiness, she smiled warmly and said, "Jamie should be happy. Be happy, my dear." Her simple words brought tears to Jamie's eyes.
Next came notifying friends and family. Nina, Wilfred and the others all shared their congratulations in the group chat, promising to attend the wedding in person.
After checking her list, Jamie realized everyone who needed to know had been informed-except for one person.
Ben wrapped his arms around her waist from behind, his deep voice soft and tender. "I've actually seen her just a few days ago."
Jamie immediately turned to face him. "Why didn't you tell me?"
"She's not ready to see you yet."
"Really..." Jamie's voice trailed off as she took a step back, her balance faltering. Ben quickly steadied her, preventing her from falling. Even so, her complexion remained pale.
How could she feel fine? What kind of sister would know her sibling was alive and desperately wanted to see her, only to be refused again and again?
Jamie couldn't help but blame
herself. Was it because she hadt
been a good enough sister? Was that why Winnie still didn't want to meet her?
Ben comforted her gently. "Don't blame yourself. This was her decision. Besides, she's not refusing to come to the wedding."
Jamie's dim eyes lit up slightly. "Does that mean she'll be there?"
Ben nodded, and only then did Jamie's expression brighten a little.
When she heard that Winnie had let go of her past obsessions, Jamie finally sighed in relief. As long as they could meet again, that was enough.
The wedding was scheduled for two weeks later, and there was much to prepare.
First on the list was the wedding dress. While Jamie was still agonizing over her options, Ben had already taken care of it.
When she saw the familiar gown, she was stunned. "You bought this one?"
The assistant glanced at Ben and answered for him. "Mr. Lucas asked me to purchase it days ago. He wanted to save it just for you."
Even the assistant felt conflicted. Someone he thought of as a colleague was now about to become his boss's wife. It felt surreal.
Jamie was even more surprised, her
heart warming as she processed his thoughtfulness. Her gaze naturally shifted to Ben, filled with an unspoken affection she couldn't
hide.
