Chapter 8
It was chilling.
Just like in the past life, when she spoke to him, he was always distant, cold, and dripping with disdain.
He had pegged her as a woman full of schemes. Her explanations were nothing but sophistry to him.
So, she didn't bother explaining anymore.
Sylvia forced a bitter smile, "Like I said, the person in the photo isn't me. Since Bridget doesn't claim it, we might as well ask Uncle himself.
But it's funny, Bridget, you and Uncle are engaged. It's only natural for you two to do something intimate. Rupert didn't even object just now, why the rush to explain? It's as if you're saying you don't love him." Throwing mud, she could do it too. She had learned it from Bridget in a past life, after all.
Bridget's face stiffened, and without even adjusting her expression, she turned around, shaking her head repeatedly.
"No, it's not that. I love Rupert, I just don't want to lie, that's all."
"If you don't want to lie, why slander me? Besides..." Sylvia locked eyes with Rupert, emphasizing every word, "Besides, is Rupert the only man in the world? Could the child not belong to someone else?" She swore to herself, "Rupert, in this lifetime, I'd rather be involved with a stranger than have anything to do with you!"
As Rupert heard this, his knuckles turned white, his gaze unfathomable.
In a deep voice, he asked, "What did you say?"
Sylvia repeated, raising her voice, "I said, you aren't the only man in the world! I could carry anyone's child, but it would never be yours! Am I wrong?"
Rupert squinted, his presence overpowering, almost making Sylvia lose her footing.
She quickly turned away, looking at the others.
"Anything else? If not, I'm quite tired and will go rest now."
She turned to leave.
"Stop!" Rupert's tone became harsher, his voice terrifying, "Who is it?"
Everyone was taken aback. No one expected Rupert to ask such a question.
Sylvia lowered her gaze, hiding all her emotions.
At this point, how could he not know who it was? But she knew what Rupert wanted.
She pulled out her phone and glanced at it briefly; then looking at Rupert, she said indifferently, "Rupert, don't worry, everything will be over soon."
Rupert's brow furrowed subtly; the man who thought he controlled everything was visibly irked.
Then, the butler came in with security.
"Looking for Ms. Sylvia Lloyd."
Seeing so many people, the security said respectfully, "Ms. Lloyd, your delivery is here. Outsiders aren't allowed in the community, so I brought it over."
Sylvia stepped forward and took the opaque bag, addressing him lightly, "Thanks."
After the security guard left, Sylvia, under everyone's gaze, walked to the coffee table and emptied the bag.
It was morning-after pills.
Just before, after talking to Naomi, she still felt uneasy and had secretly ordered another pack to ensure nothing went wrong. Little did she know, it would actually come in handy. Sylvia opened the pill box in front of everyone, taking out the foil pack and showing it to them one by one, especially lingering in front of Rupert for a few seconds.
"Rupert, see clearly now? These are birth control pills, right? Rest assured, I will never carry a child I shouldn't. Isn't this what you were waiting for?"
Sylvia laughed bitterly at herself, quickly taking out ten pills. Then, she swiftly put one pill in her mouth.
"One pill enough? No? Then here's more! Two! Three! Four..."
Everyone was silent, staring at Sylvia in astonishment.
Just as Sylvia was about to take the fifth pill, unexpectedly, Edwin, who always obeyed Tristan, rushed out and knocked the pills away.
"Rupert, what do you want? Sylvia said it's not her, why are you making it so hard for her? Won't this sound ugly if it gets out?"
Naomi embraced Sylvia, choking up, "Enough! Enough! She's not even married yet! Eating these like this could be dangerous!"
By then, Sylvia was in so much pain that she broke out in cold sweat. Even so, she still mustered the strength to show Rupert her palm, revealing one last pill. "Is this enough?"
