Chapter 267
"Ouch..."
Rebecca yelped, "Mom, what are you doing? Let me go!"
She struggled against Kathlen.
"Answer me first," Kathlen demanded, her eyes locked on Rebecca's. "Tell me everything, and don't leave out a single detail!"
Rebecca was taken aback by her mother's sternness. She had never seen her so serious before and, nervous as she was, she spilled everything she knew. After listening, Kathlen fell silent.
Everyone knew Selena was the neglected one. After three years of marriage, she still had no baby, while Everett had a mistress on the side.
So, Kathlen never saw Selena as a threat. As for the mistress, without a legitimate status and with Josh's disapproval, an illegitimate child wouldn't cause much trouble.
In families like the Bennetts, reputation and lineage were everything. Otherwise, the scandals from the main branch wouldn't have caused such chaos back then.
Josh had set strict rules: anyone who dared to step out of line would be kicked out of the Bennett family!
Who would have thought Selena would end up pregnant?
That meant her baby would be the legitimate heir-the future head of the Bennett family!
The second branch was already struggling, and with Josh planning to give the inheritance to Selena, it only made Everett stronger.
Once Josh was gone, the Bennett family would completely fall to the main branch, leaving nothing for the second branch. They'd either have to live under Everett's shadow or get pushed out eventually. This couldn't happen!
Kathlen knew her husband couldn't match Everett's skills, and his pride was too big to be bossed around by a younger guy. He was reckless at work, always clashing with Everett, just a disaster waiting to happen. To protect their wealth and status, Selena's baby couldn't be allowed to be born!
The next morning, sunlight poured into the hospital room, warming everything up.
Selena, who had been restless and sleep-deprived for days because of her pregnancy, finally got a good night's sleep and woke up feeling fantastic.
She turned her head and saw a big bunch of bright red roses on the coffee table, which lifted her spirits even more. Her eyes sparkled with joy.
Ava noticed and said with a smile, "Ma'am, Mr Bennett picked these roses himself this morning. He said flowers make women happy. He

hoped seeing them would cheer you up and help you recover faster."
Everett called in Ava specifically to look after Selena.
"Who brings roses to a hospital visit?" Selena grumbled, but her smile was almost ear-to-ear.
Ava could see through Selena's playful modesty and didn't call her out on it. She just asked, "Should I put them in a vase?"
Selena nodded softly. "Alright, they're too pretty not to."
Ava went off to find a vase while Selena picked up her phone to chat idly with Joy.
Joy was on a business trip and couldn't visit Selena in the hospital, so she comforted her through messages.
They also took the chance to vent about Rebecca.
Joy and Rebecca had been rivals forever. Since Joy became Josh's goddaughter, making her sort of the Bennett family's little princess, Rebecca saw her as a threat to her unique status and always picked fights.

Besides Everett, Joy wasn't afraid of anyone. With a fiery temper, she never backed down from Rebecca. The two of them were constantly at odds, their rivalry never-ending.
Having Joy to talk to made Selena feel a huge weight lift off her
shoulders.
Soon, footsteps echoed in the hallway. Thinking it was Ava coming back, Selena looked up, surprised to see Kathlen dragging a reluctant Rebecca into the room.
