Chapter 37
"What?" Sunny was surprised by Nathan's hurried actions. "It's still half-past five in the morning, Nathan. Where are you going?"
"I'm having breakfast at Tasya's place." He grabbed his blazer hanging on the dining chair. "I'm leaving, Ma. Naina, don't cause any trouble at school. Remember, you have an exam soon." "Yes, Dad," Naina replied, rolling her eyes lazily..
"You're such a handful for Tasya." Sunny wanted to scold her son, but Nathan was quick with excuses. This annoyed Sunny, and Nathan responded with a chuckle before giving his mother and Naina a quick peck on the cheek. He rushed towards his car, determined not to let Tasya beat him to the office this morning.
He decided to skip breakfast, quickly warming up his car and driving off, despite his mother having prepared his favorite filled rolls for him. That was okay; he had a mission to complete. His morning commute was accompanied by low-volume audio, and traffic hadn't built up too much yet, thanks to the shy, blue morning sky.
Arriving at the gate, which was mostly covered in rust, Nathan honked his horn, ensuring there was someone inside. When no one came out to greet him, he unbuckled his seatbelt. He entered by pushing open the creaky gate, producing a sound reminiscent of a trapped mouse.
"Good morning," Nathan greeted as he knocked on the open door, where the scent of fried rice suddenly filled the air. "Wow, smells delicious."
"Good morning. Oh, Mr. Nathan!" Robin greeted with his hair still half-wet, already dressed in his school uniform. "Come in, Mr.! Tasya is making fried rice with shrimp. She went shopping before dawn, said Mr. Nathan would definitely want breakfast at our place."
Nathan's smile couldn't have been wider. Waking up early had clearly not been in vain. "Coincidentally, I haven't had breakfast yet."
Robin laughed. Their steps led them to the dining table where Ronan was helping his sister prepare breakfast. Tasya, still in her pajamas, with her hair in a messy bun, expertly navigated the kitchen. The aromatic mix of spices in the fried rice was making Nathan's stomach impatient.
"Good morning, Tasya," Nathan greeted, and their eyes met briefly.
"Morning." Tasya wasn't surprised by Nathan's arrival. Not only did he send a message, and the sound of his car horn had been heard, but her younger brother's excited greeting had already confirmed Nathan's presence. Still, she wasn't ready to be as friendly as she used to be.
She hadn't forgotten Bonnie's words.
Despite everything, Tasya had come to a conclusion. "What Bonnie said may not be true. Bonnie has always been good at pretending for her own purposes." She should have had enough experience dealing with Bonnie to make a judgment, right?
But there was something holding her back.
She was just an ordinary woman, filled with suspicion, especially when the person she loved had a penchant for wandering. There must be unexpected things that could shake them. Her suspicions turned out to be true, right? She didn't want to think about it, but honestly, Tasya could only fall into a deep sleep when the wall clock had passed the number two. This happened without her realizing it because the anger in her heart kept her thinking: Nathan must have chosen Bonnie. But if Bonnie was lying, it was the same as Nathan being trapped.
Ah! These negative thoughts kept haunting Tasya alternately. She needed to put an end to all the things that created so many questions in her heart and mind. She needed to talk to Nathan, to confirm whether the news was true or not. Because since Bonnie's confession yesterday, Tasya had been avoiding all of Nathan's explanations.
"Wow, it's been so long since I had breakfast made by Tasya." Robin had to be patient. His plate in front of him was still empty, and his stomach had already been demanding to be filled. Usually, Robin had breakfast at school.
That innocent request suddenly made Nathan feel guilty. He often monopolized Tasya's presence at his house. Not to mention their business trips out of town, and the past few times when Tasya had been spending a lot of time at his place. "Do you want me to pack some for you?" Tasya asked with a cheerful smile.
"Sure!" both his younger siblings exclaimed.
"Oh, Robin, you too?" Nathan was surprised.
"Yeah, why not? When else can we get packed breakfast from Tasya?"
Ah, being appreciated like this already made Tasya's heart swell.
"Uh, I want some too, Tasya. Don't forget me."
That comment made Tasya turn and furrow her brow. "You too?"
Nathan nodded quickly.
"I'm not cooking extra. Just enough for breakfast for four and their packed meals."
Nathan's shoulders slumped. "That's mean."
"Just for the others, okay?"
"What if you run out?"
"I won't, today."
Nathan's brow furrowed even more. "Are you... taking the day off?"
Without hesitation, Tasya nodded. "You signed it yesterday, remember?"
"Keep me updated, okay." Nathan felt like taking a day off too. If only he could suddenly forget his responsibilities, he would have already taken Tasya to her destination today. Perhaps yesterday he panicked because of Tasya's changed behavior, which is why he signed that paper without thinking about where Tasya was going.
"Yeah." Tasya felt like she had said this a million times. It was getting tedious, but because Nathan needed to hear it with his own ears, Tasya tried to be patient.
"But are you sure you can go alone?" Nathan stared at Tasya intently. "What if your mom goes berserk again?"
"Ronan said that Mama is calmer there. Maybe there's someone who can understand the depth of her thoughts."
Nathan agreed with that, but letting Tasya visit the Mental Hospital alone didn't sit well with him. "I'll take a day off, then."
"Don't be silly!" Tasya snapped. "You have a ton of meetings, Nathan."
"But I'm not satisfied with our conversation yet. There are still things I need to explain so you won't frown at me anymore." "What's wrong with me frowning?"
Nathan sighed. "I can't stand seeing you like that."
"Why? What's the reason?"
Narrowing her eyebrows, Tasya asked, "It's really strange."
"I feel ignored, Tasya. I can't be treated like that by you."
"But you often do whatever you want with me."
Nathan slumped his shoulders even more. "I apologize."
"Just go to the office. I won't take long. I'll pick up Naina after the visit. We already made plans yesterday."
"Naina can be with you, but I can't. It's so unfair, Mama Raptor."
"How heartless," Nathan grumbled. "Now I'm not motivated to work. You won't talk much, your face lacks a smile, and you seem to care more about the child than me, and... especially after hearing what you just said." "Why are you suddenly like Naina?" Tasya laughed. "So clingy. Inappropriate, Nathan. Remember your age. I should be the one sulking, not you."
"Since I'm waiting for your sulking or complaints, which haven't arrived yet, I thought I'd take the initiative."
"Nonsense." Tasya continued to defend her laughter. "Leave now, Nathan, or you'll be late. Remember, a boss sets an example for his subordinates."
"Alright, alright." Nathan checked the time on his wristwatch. "It's almost half-past seven. I'll leave now."
Tasya simply nodded. She understood that their time together was limited. There were activities amidst the problems that plagued them. Tasya thought that if she were selfish, it wouldn't only be Nathan who would lose out. She would too. So she chose to talk later that evening when the atmosphere would be much more relaxed and she could listen better.
"Oh, Nathan," Tasya called out, causing him to halt his movement towards the car. He looked at the girl who was still staring at him intently.
"What is it?"
"Can Naina come back here? I want to cook, but at my place. Not at your place because Robin asked for vegetable stir-fry."
Nathan's smile widened. "Can I join for dinner?"
"At night? The menu is different for dinner. I'm making chicken steak. Would you like that?"
"I'd love that!"
"Okay." Tasya laughed. "Do your job properly, alright?"
"Got it."
"Um... don't accept guests like Bonnie, okay?"
Nathan's eyes blinked rapidly, then he nodded obediently. "Sure thing, Mama Raptor. I won't entertain her. I'll prove that woman's words are just empty talk." "I'll be waiting for the proof."
