Mommy,We Got a Husband

Chapter 271 It's All My Fault, I Was Too Indifferent

"No, I feel much better now," Alaric said as he slowly sat up. Stellan quickly supported him, helping him lie back down on the bed.

"I've told you so many times that you can't drive in your condition," Stellan said, both worried and angry. "Your episodes are unpredictable. What if you have one while driving? It's too dangerous. From now on, you can't drive yourself anymore. When we go out, I'll drive. If I'm not around, let the driver do it. Got it?"

"Yes, got it. I won't drive myself until I'm fully recovered." Alaric nodded quickly.

"Good," Stellan said, wiping the sweat from Alaric's forehead with a towel. "You can't keep neglecting your health. Whether or not the jewelry company acquisition goes through, you should stop working to get treatment. I don't need you to achieve great things in your career; I just want you to be well. I need you, and the kids need you."

Stellan's voice was hoarse as she spoke. She was genuinely scared.

She became parentless after Brennan passed away. Fortunately, with Harry and Elisa's help, she was finally married to Alaric, and their family of five was reunited.

"Why are you about to cry?" Alaric quickly comforted Stellan. "Don't worry. I'm tough. I won't die."

"How tough can you be? Tough enough to be immortal?" Stellan, as a doctor, knew better than anyone how fragile life was. "Alaric, you're married now. Your health isn't just your own concern, understand?"

Of course, Alaric knew this. He quickly pulled Stellan into his arms and admitted, "Galatea, I know everything you're saying. Don't worry. I've been gradually handing out responsibilities during the recent busy days. Once everything is arranged, I won't do any work and will focus solely on my treatment."

"You said it, and you must keep your word," Stellan said.

"I definitely will," Alaric promised, then hesitated. "But if I stop to get treatment, my mom will have to take over the company again. I really don't want her to get involved. Our management philosophies are completely different, and she always likes to make a lot of changes."

Hearing this, Stellan felt a bit guilty, thinking if only she had the ability to help him with his work.

If it came to that, with Marigold managing Nexus Innovations, Stellan wouldn't have an easy time either.

However, that was a matter for the future. The priority now was Alaric's health.

"Don't worry about that now. We'll deal with it when the time comes. Just focus on your treatment. Once your condition is cured, you can do whatever you want in your career.

You're only thirty. Even if it takes the longest recovery period of five years, you'll still be just thirty-five. You'll have plenty of time to develop your career before you retire." Hearing this, Alaric gave a bitter smile and asked, "You don't want me to retire even at that old age?"

"If you enjoy your work, go ahead. Since you love your career so much, you can keep at it. Even if you're in a wheelchair, I'll push you to the company," Stellan joked.

Alaric just laughed. He thought if it really came to that, it would be quite a warm and romantic scene.

"By the way, I've been so worried about your health that I forgot to ask. Did you see Cormac today?" Stellan asked quickly.

"Yes, I did." Alaric told Stellan about Cormac's current living situation and Cormac's attitude towards him.

Stellan felt deeply troubled after hearing it. "Griffon is extremely guilty and deserves any punishment he gets. But Cormac is so innocent, and yet he's the one who suffers the most. It's just not fair."

Stellan felt heartbroken. She quickly asked Alaric, "Alaric, can you secretly help Cormac so he can have a better life?"

Alaric frowned and shook his head. "If he were willing, I could help in any way. But he's very resistant right now. How can I help secretly? Should I ask his boss to help him more, increase his salary, or donate anonymously to that little girl?" "Cormac is so smart. If I did any of these things, he would definitely find out. And once he knows, he'll be even angrier, feeling humiliated by me. He might even leave Arizona altogether," Alaric replied.

"Then there's no way. Are you two just going to go your separate ways for the rest of your lives?" Stellan asked.

Alaric couldn't answer that question. He certainly didn't want it to be that way, but Cormac's attitude was very firm.

Alaric sighed deeply and said, "It's my fault. I didn't manage our friendship well. Cormac was right; I've always been too indifferent."

At this point, Alaric really hated himself. He continued, "Ever since I could remember, my parents were always fighting. I didn't want to stay at home, but Cormac was overly enthusiastic. I just wanted to be alone, but he always dragged me to his house."

"In class, I already knew the answers to the questions the teacher had asked, but Cormac always wanted to tutor me. When I said he was annoying, he called me arrogant. I was clearly more mature and could keep my life in order, but Cormac's enthusiastic care always made my life chaotic," recalled Alaric.

He continued, "When I was training, my schedule was packed almost every minute of the day, except for a few hours of sleep. Then Cormac would call me to talk about trivial things. Eventually, I just got tired of that and stopped answering. And after I woke up from a coma, Cormac thought he should be responsible for my health as a doctor. However, he was just a psychologist and didn't know much about my condition, yet he always worried so much. Cormac has been like that since we were kids. I always found it strange. Why was my life so full and busy, while his seemed so dull, like he had all the time in the world?"

"From my nearly thirty years of knowing him, I thought Cormac was someone with a thick skin and a carefree attitude. Whether I found him annoying or directly told him to get lost, he never took it to heart. Whenever I needed him, Cormac would always answer immediately and never held a grudge," Alaric confided.

"It was like I subconsciously believed that no matter how I treated Cormac, he would always be there, just a phone call away. I never thought there would come a day when Cormac and I wouldn't be friends anymore, let alone that I would become someone he never wanted to see again. It was Cormac's initiative and efforts that made me take him for granted, making me completely ignore his feelings. I turned what should have been a brotherly relationship into one that felt like master and servant. It's my fault," he said.

Stellan had never heard Alaric say so much at once. She knew he wasn't good at expressing himself.

After all, Alaric had grown up with Cormac, and Cormac was his only friend. Now that he had completely lost Cormac, how could he not be sad?
