Revenge of the Scorned Witch

Chapter 17 — Hatred

It turned out to be a long night. It wasn't until about three am when I got the call from Bryan telling me that they were ok and that Ellis didn't put up a fight, except for his friend Mike, who had shot at Randy but missed. Randy had shot back at him and killed him. They had to file their reports, then they'd be home. I told him reluctantly about the phone call I had gotten from Ellis and told him that I was willing to file a complaint against him and that he should do the same since he had threatened an FBI Agent. We hung up, and I went to bed, reminding myself that I needed to send a message to Jarred in the morning so they could come home and I could open my café up again. I saw that Randy and Bryan made it home safe early this morning. They had their holsters with their guns in them lying on the coffee table and their badges and their shoes on the floor. I would have gotten mad about it, but I knew that they were probably worn out. As I made some coffee, I sent the message "Safe" to Jarred's phone so he would know it's safe to come back home. I went on about my day, ordering things that the café needed, along with making out the payroll checks. I added a little more to Kaylee, Laura's, and Preston's checks since they had to take off because of their father's escape. I decided to head into Ardmore to file the complaint against Ellis, but before I left, I made sure to leave a note for Bryan, letting them know where I was so they didn't need to worry about me. I was about to leave the station when they called me back.

"Ellis is requesting to talk to you before they send him to the Federal prison. We were going to call you, but you are already here, so we don't have to," She chuckled lightly. Out of curiosity, I agreed to talk with him. The officer leads me down the hallway to a meeting room, which consisted of a table and two chairs. Another officer escorted a shackled Ellis into the room. I felt a sense of pride to see him in an orange jumpsuit with chains on his wrists and ankles. I was grateful when the officer stayed in the room with us.

"So you were already here since I just asked to see you before they sent me back to Federal prison," He stated.

"That's right, I was here, now what do you want?" I ordered.

"I just wanted to see my bride again before they sent me away," He smiled.

"I'm not your bride anymore, I had our marriage annulled after they arrested you the first time."

"Just because you filed a piece of paper doesn't make us divorced. You are always going to be my wife, don't you forget that."

"Are you trying to plead insanity? Because I know better, you're as sane as they come."

"No, I'm not acting mental, I'm dead serious. You will always be my wife, and I'll be out and back in our bed with you soon. Then he stands up and blows me a kiss, and the officer escorts him out of the room. I wait in the room until the officer comes back to show me out, but not before giving me a word of advice.

"When you leave here, I would stop by the courthouse to get a restraining order, ma'am. If you need a witness, just tell them to call me over here at the station and ask for Officer Thompson," I told him thank you and left the station. Taking his advice, I went a got me a restraining order, even though I knew that a piece of paper wouldn't help if he wanted to get to me. Bryan called me on my way home to see if I was ok because I had been gone longer than I had planned. "I'm ok, after I filed the complaint, I was told that Ellis wanted to talk to me. I'll give you the details on that after I get back, plus I stopped by the courthouse to file a restraining order on him. Don't ask why, you'll understand when I get back," I explained.

"Ok, so you'll tell me when you get back," He laughed.

When I made it back home, I told Bryan and Randy what Ellis had said about me always being his wife and that the divorce was just a piece of paper. I also told them about the security guard's advice about filing for a restraining order. "I filed it even though it won't do a bit of good, but at least it's on record if anything ever happens to me or if something happens to him at my hand," I explained to them.

"Nothing is going to happen to you, Joy, ok?" Bryan said solemnly. "He is going to be behind bars for the rest of his life."

I knew he was right, but I had a hard time shaking this feeling that it wasn't over yet with Ellis.

In the days to come, we all fell back into our old routine: Randy went back home to Oklahoma City. Bryan decided to stay with me and transferred from California to the Oklahoma City office. Preston was told that I was his birth mother; his reaction to the news wasn't as surprised as I thought it would be. Our life went on quietly for about a month, then the letters started coming from Ellis with ramblings about how I was still his wife and how he was going to come for me and his children. These notes came every week from him, the next one creepier than the last. I saved them in a file for evidence purposes, plus I sent the originals to Randy at the FBI office for safekeeping. I wasn't going to take any chances when it came to Ellis.
