Chapter 88 Imprisoned
Emily said, "Mom, if you have something to say, just spit it out."
Scarlett, hearing Emily's words, decided to cut the crap and get straight to the point. "I was gonna be blunt with you anyway. Take this money and stay away from Daniel. Don't piss off Veda anymore, and don't tell your grandfather, or I'll stop paying for your mom's medical bills."
She added, "And also, before you divorce Michael, you shouldn't always stay in the hospital. You can't even get pregnant, yet you're always sick. It's bad luck! You're ruining the Smith family's reputation!"
After saying that, Scarlett covered her nose and coughed a few times, like she'd been somewhere super unlucky.
She then brushed off her clothes and left the guest room with a look of disgust.
So, they didn't want her in the master bedroom because they thought she was bad luck?
Staring at the bank card in front of her, Emily took a deep breath and sat down on the floor by the bed.
At that moment, she felt completely drained, utterly defeated.
She carefully replayed Scarlett's words in her mind.
Emily sighed. Ever since she married Michael, she'd been busy taking care of his every need.
She'd lost herself in the process.
After finally taking good care of him, now they blamed her for never having worked a day in her life?
These rich folks really knew how to flip the script!
Just then, Emily's phone rang. She glanced at it and immediately answered without thinking, "Abigail, your call couldn't have come at a better time!"
Abigail asked, "What's up? Miss me? Weren't you supposed to be living it up at the old mansion?"
Emily replied, "I'm back, but I haven't seen Grandpa yet. I'm in the guest room for now."
"What? The Smith family is so broke they can't even hire a maid to clean the guest room, and you have to do it yourself?"
"What are you talking about? The master bedroom is being cleaned, so I'm crashing in the guest room for the night. By the way, I wanted to ask if you have any well-paying design gigs lately. I need to make some money." Although Emily used to make decent money as a designer for Moonlit Treasures, it was nothing compared to Isabella's medical expenses.
So, Emily had to find a way to take on more projects, drawing designs day and night, or maybe, get lucky with a big break.
Otherwise, she had no idea how she'd cover Isabella's medical bills next month.
Between the two options, the former seemed more reliable.
That was why Emily was urgently asking Abigail.
Abigail said, "I can ask around for you, but Emily, don't get your hopes up too high!"
She added, "After the plagiarism mess with Sophia, Moonlit Treasures took a big hit, and their profits have noticeably dropped, so..." But despite everything, Emily didn't regret dealing with Sophia.
At least she made her suffer, and she wouldn't dare to plagiarize and frame her again!
After hanging up the phone, Emily looked at the bank card again.
She had no choice but to agree to Scarlett's demands for now.
After all, she was pregnant and couldn't take on odd jobs, nor could she reveal her identity as a designer.
She thought that if she could just swallow this humiliation for now, Isabella's treatment could continue.
But little did Emily know, her adventures at the old mansion were just getting started.
Later, Emily finally got all her clothes organized and cleaned the guest room from top to bottom. The room finally looked a bit more lived-in.
She breathed a sigh of relief, ready to find something to eat and check if Mason was awake.
Who would have thought, as soon as she tried to turn the door lock, the handle fell off without warning!
And the door was completely locked from the outside.
How could she be so unlucky?
Of all places, she was led to a guest room that was falling apart?
At first, Emily didn't realize this was a long-planned scheme by Scarlett and Veda.
She just thought most of the old mansion needed repairs, and she was just unlucky.
She had already been furious with Michael at noon and hadn't eaten much. Now, in the afternoon, she was troubled by more worries. She hadn't even had a sip of water, let alone a bite of food.
Emily said, "Baby, it's all my fault. You're suffering because of me."
Thinking of this, Emily felt even worse. She started knocking on the door and calling for help, but there was no response from outside. It was merely early evening, so where were the people in the old mansion?
Compared to the bleak and cold guest room, the main hall of the old mansion was bustling and lively.
Veda said, "Grandpa, you have to try this dish, how is it? And this one, I made the fish! I carefully studied the recipe, you must try it!" Mason sat at the head of the table.
He had just come down from his room, feeling refreshed after a good nap, and his appetite was wide open.
He was about to ask what was for dinner when he found out Veda was cooking, making four dishes and a soup.
It was extremely rare!
It must have been last night's lecture that worked, or maybe the credit card suspension scared Veda!
After all, Mason was always tough in words but tender at heart.
Veda, like Michael, might not be as sensible, but she was still his granddaughter. How could he not be fond of her?
So, he was now being coaxed into trying her dishes.
Mason said happily, "This is good, this is good too, just like restaurant food."
He added, "Veda, you've worked hard. I didn't expect your cooking to be this good. I really like it! Come, sit and eat with us!"
Saying this, Mason took another bite of meat.
Standing nearby, Benjamin wanted to remind Mason that at his age, he should avoid certain foods.
Especially since Veda's dishes were quite spicy and greasy, which was bad for the elderly.
But just as he was about to speak, Scarlett shot him a vicious look. Her gaze seemed to menace Benjamin, warning him that if he dared to utter a single word, he might find himself unable to remain with the Smith family. Benjamin wasn't afraid of Scarlett.
But with Michael and Emily not around, Scarlett was in charge of most things at home.
Even though Benjamin was older and more experienced, he couldn't openly challenge the mistress. It would create a negative influence, and even with Mason's support, Scarlett and Veda would still make his life difficult. So, he decided to wait for a moment when they weren't paying attention to quietly advise Mason.
Meanwhile, Scarlett said to Mason, "Dad, if you like it, eat more. You can't let Veda's efforts go to waste!"
