Under the Heiress' Facade

Chapter 729

Chapter 729

"Why does that surprise you?" Instead of answering the question, Bernard posed one of his

own.

"Why, you!" Chad was so pissed off that he choked on his words. Bernard was the only person who could rile him up this easily. "Unblock every last one of my phone numbers." Bernard snorted. "Why do I have to do that? What makes you think that I have to obey you?" Chad was so enraged that his blood pressure was on the cusp of surging. Bernard had truly grown up and became independent now. Chad couldn't control him anymore.

Chad took several deep breaths. If he got mad over this again, he wouldn't be able to tell Bernard why he came here today.

"I'll stop getting in between you and Hera, but you have to come back and work at the headquarters." Chad went straight to the point.

Bernard chortled sarcastically as if he had heard the funniest joke in the world. "What makes you think you can disrupt my love life?"

Neil noticed that Chad's face had completely reddened. It was a sign that he was about to fly into a rage. He couldn't help but advise, "Your eldest brother is still the head of the family, Mr. Bernard. It'd be wise to mind your attitude a little. Don't keep upsetting him."

The mention of their ties ticked Bernard off immediately. "Eldest brother? He's the reason my mother is dead, and he even tried to kill me. Is that your idea of a brother? Some brother he is!"

Bernard cast a sidelong glance at Chad. "Have you no shame, Chad Killian? Have you forgotten how you were adamantly against my return to the Killian family? Did it slip your mind that you dumped me into the army like a piece of garbage?

"Now, you're begging me to return. How are you this shameless?"

Chad's lips twitched, but he couldn't form a good comeback. After all, he was guilty of everything Bernard said.

Neil noticed that Chad wasn't defending himself, so he explained, "You've misunderstood, Mr. Bernard. Mr. Chad sent you to the army for your own good."

"Shut up! What makes you think you have the right to speak?" Bernard retorted coldly.

Neil stopped talking, feeling embarrassed. Then, he kept signaling Chad to clarify everything. After all, Chad and Bernard had enough misunderstandings to last a lifetime. Life itself was short and fleeting. There was no need to keep something a secret because of pride.

However, Chad didn't say anything, even when Bernard turned around and left. It left Neil feeling extremely anxious.

That was how Chad was. The more he cared about a person, the poorer he was with words and the harder it was for him to express his concerns. What was worse was that he prided his dignity above all else.

Chad saw that Bernard was about to walk out of the hallway if he didn't say anything. He finally asked slowly, "What will it take for you to return to the family?"

Bernard stopped in his tracks. "I'll rejoin the family when you're dead!" His voice was cold and filled with hatred toward Chad.

Chad watched as Bernard walked to the end of the corridor and disappeared. His gaze was grim.

"He still wants me dead," Chad murmured.

Neil was shocked when he heard what Bernard said. He immediately comforted Chad, saying, "You're overthinking it, Mr. Chad. Mr. Bernard was merely speaking out of anger." "No." Chad shook his head gently. Bernard genuinely wanted him dead. After all, Pamela wouldn't have died if it weren't for him.

Chad owed him, and the debt would last for as long as he lived.

In the courtroom, the judge was ready for the trial. All sorts of outsiders occupied the seats. As for the Killian family, Karen only brought with her some unrelated people.

Catherine swept her eyes across the courtroom. She felt a little disheartened when she didn't see Giselle.

"Giselle is such a heartless lady. She didn't even show up at her own mother's trial. You shouldn't have spared her back then," Samantha said.

"Letting her live and suffer is far more entertaining than giving her a swift death," Hera responded.

Samantha mulled it over and found that it was good reasoning. The Killian family was huge and locked in constant strife. Giselle was in for a hell of a suffering.

At that moment, a police officer brought Linda to the courtroom.

It had only been a few days since they last saw Linda, but her hair had turned gray. She had always taken care of her appearance. Now, she looked haggard. She downright seemed like an old woman in her 70s.
