Caroline's POV:
I worriedly poured over the mysterious text message a hundred times over, and even then, I still couldn't wrap my head around it. The phone number was a complete mystery to me, and when I tried to think of who could have sent it to me, my mind caine up blank. William was certainly callous and vengeful enough, but if he wanted to taunt me, he would have just done so to my face.
I forced myself to put my phone down and endeavored to ignore the text. I couldn't be distracted from my ultimate goal: discovering the truth behind my beloved father's framing and proving his innocence. Despite the determination thrummed in my veins, I had an uphill battle ahead of me, for the answers were in William's laptop.
Countless files had gone woefully uninspected in William's computer, and although the video seemed incriminating, doubt was at the forefront of my mind. The video had been frustratingly silent, so their conversation was left a puzzling mystery.
Only two people knew the truth behind that confounding video: Sophia and my father.
Sophia was a scornful woman whose trustworthiness was dubious at best. Not to mention how she had so callously taken my life away from me. Not only had that temptress seduced my ex-husband into having an affair, but she also had a hand in my poor baby boy's demise. The look in her eyes when she shoved me into the lake was forever seared into my memory.
So disdainful of Sophia was I that I would sooner bear through William's delusional trite than go to her for answers. The fastest way to get the answers I desperately needed was to go to the source of controversy directly: my father.
Several grueling days passed before I tentatively went out to see him. I hesitated in venturing out in fear I may somehow bump into William while he tirelessly searched for me, but as time ticked by, I slowly felt safe enough to find my father. William's patience was surprisingly thin, so his search would have had a swift end.
Martin and Cindy showed their kindness by consistently checking up on me, making sure that I was alright and that I hadn't been kidnapped by William again. It took several reassurances to placate their worries, but they believed me in the end, and their trust filled my heart with gratitude. In this time of uncertainty, it was nice to know I had people who I could depend on.
My worries returned with a vengeance when I found that I couldn't get my father to respond to my messages. I sent concerned text after concerned text, but he never answered. Worry gripped me like a vice, and in my growing fear, I went to visit him myself. My anxiety wouldn't let me rest until I saw him,
Chapter 0030
My anxiety skyrocketed when, upon arriving atony father's home, I found the front door ajar. Confusion buzzed inside me and I wasted no time, immediately rushing inside. Dad?" I called, scanning the room for him. When I saw his collapsed form on the ground, my hear "Dad!" I cried out, dashing to his side. He was pale, and for a heart-stopping moment. My fears were quickly alleviated upon seeing his chest steadily heave, and I let out a sob of relief. He may still have been unconscious on the floor, but it was outweighed by my gratitude that my father was still with me.
I called out to him helplessly, trying to shake him awake. "Dad, please, wake up. It's me, Caroline. Please, I'm begging you to look at me."
Despite my best efforts, he still wasn't getting up, and my failure had me wracked with guilt. To my devastation, he must have been in a deep coma.
An ambulance was swiftly called for, and the emergency services were sympathetic as they instructed me to stay by his side until they arrived. I did so gladly, holding his hand and trying to quell my sobbing. When they finally did show up and loaded him into the vehicle, they mercifully offered me a chance to be by his side on the way to the hospital. I nearly leapt into the ambulance to be with my father, but that was when I finally noticed just how messy everything in the house was.
Papers were strewn everywhere, drawers were yanked open, and objects were carelessly thrown to the ground. Was my father injured in some sort of robbery?
His grand study was a chaotic mess of papers and tossed aside books. It was a difficult sight to behold, but I ventured in and, to my shock, found my father's safe deposit box wide open. The only things my father kept in that box were his most important documents, which were now carelessly rifled through in a mess of crumpled paper.
A cold sweat broke out on my back. Someone had broken into my father's home, brutally attacked him, and stolen from his safe deposit box. Who could have done this?
