Chapter 0031 Chapter 0031
Caroline's POV:
My father was rushed to the hospital, where frantic doctors quickly escorted his unconscious body to the operating room. My eyes widened in horror when I was told that his condition was life-threatening. My father had been brutally struck on the head and needed emergency brain surgery as soon as possible.
The waiting room was filled with my sobs as I openly prayed that my father would turn out alright. My dad was the only family I had left in a life full of death and abandonment. If he died, his legacy would be as a criminal, and he was too good a man for that fate. While I anxiously waited for the operation to be over, possible clues from the past few days came rushing back to me. My mind scrutinized William's undying hatred towards my father, the incriminating yet dubious video on his computer, the mysterious text I'd gotten, and the possible reasons why someone would want to hurt a man as kind and generous as my father.
Was it possible that the person who had framed my father had found out that police were on their trail? Perhaps they callously decided my father needed to be silenced for good. Who would want my father dead that badly, though, and why?
As these questions warred in my mind, I was pulled from my thoughts by a sudden phone call. To my pleasant surprise, on the other end was the private detective I had hired to prove my father's innocence. My heart leapt as I dared to hope. Had he found something useful towards saving my father?
"Thank you for getting back to me," I began, nervous to hear the news. "I assume you have something for me?"
A hearty chuckle sounded on the other end. "That I do," he replied. "Now, where should I start? Well, it turns out that, quite a while ago, your father had hired a male employee who worked for him for half a year. He was dismissed because of corrupt acts that were giving the company a bad name."
"So my dad accidentally hired a corrupt worker," I murmured, absorbing the information with great interest. "What else?"
"During that time he worked for your father, the company was in a serious financial crisis. However, it was soon resolved like nothing happened. So, no one thought anything of it. The man your father fired joined a competitor company, but left after three months. No one knows where he went after that."
"Do you think he could have had a hand in my father's framing?" I asked softly, trying to keep track of the flood of information..
"Possibly," he answered in an unsure tone. "The day before he disappeared, this man had appeared in your father's office. That day was June sixth."

"My birthday," I said in astonishment. "I remember that day clearly. My father rarely lost his temper, but that day, he was completely enraged I'd never seen him so mad before."
A polite noise of agreement came from the detective. "I'm thinking that our mystery man might be the key to solving all of this. Unfortunately, I couldn't find him just yet. I have no idea where he is, but I'll keep looking and asking around. I'll investigate and let you know if anything comes up, alright?"
"Of course," I said in return. "Thank you so much for doing this for me.'
"It's no problem," he replied, and with that, the call ended..
My mind was a mess of endless questions and worries. As the days rolled by, everything became more complex and confusing. Now there was the terrifying possibility that my would never wake up again, a truth that threatened to shatter my will to keep going. father
As if on cue, the lead doctor walked out of the operating room with exhaustion spread on his face. Leaping out of my chair, I approached while twisting my hands in concern. "How is my father?" I asked, my nerves shot from the stress. 'Will he be okay?" The doctor gazed at me with sympathy in his eyes, the first sign that the news wasn't good. He's out of his critical condition," he replied softly, "but there's been some nerve damage to the brain. Because of this, he's unable to wake up right now." I slapped a hand over my mouth as I cried out in shock. "Oh my gosh," I rasped, my body involuntarily beginning to shake. It was impossible to hold back tears, and so they spilled freely down my cheeks. Was I ever going to see my father again? Despite myself, I bore a smile full of foolish hope. "But he'll wake up soon, right?"
A deafening quiet filled the air as the doctor hesitated to speak, and then turned his head in sorrow. My smile dropped like a lead balloon and I struggled to form words. "Right?" I whispered, terror crossing over my face. "He'll wake up eventually, right?" Silence ensued, and it wasn't until the doctor lowered his head sympathetically that I got my answer. "We can't exclude the possibility that he could be in a permanently vegetative state."
My heart stopped and it was like the world had been pulled out from under my feet. I was falling faster and faster and there was nothing to catch me but the cold hard ground. "What?" I croaked, tears welling up in my eyes. How could this happen?
