Chapter 368
Her long, curly eyelashes fluttered gently, yet her heart felt numb. Scenes like these, moments like this, just didn't move her anymore. She couldn't help but think: the man who had just held her, promising another chance, saying he'd never let her down again, could, in the very
next moment, cozy up to another woman at her refusal.
Ah, but that's not quite right. How could Margot be the 'other woman'? It was Selena who was the outsider. Among the three of them, she was the one unloved, the one who didn't belong. As long as Everett couldn't find it in himself to let go of Margot, there'd never be anything real between him and Selena.
A hint of sarcasm danced in Selena's eyes, though she wasn't sure if it was aimed at the unfaithful man or the naive girl she used to be.
"Ma'am, you... you saw it, didn't you?" Ava's panicked voice cut through the silence. Selena turned to see Ava, lugging a vacuum cleaner down the stairs. Ava clearly hadn't expected Selena to find the newspaper. Her face was full of regret, like someone caught in the act. Selena got it. Ava had tossed out the paper on purpose, trying to shield her from more heartache. She lifted the newspaper with a small smile. "Ava, no need to hide those things... they don't bother me."
She placed the newspaper on the counter, pulled her coat tighter around her, and headed out to the garden. Watching her slim figure retreat, Ava felt a pang of sympathy. Annoyed, she grabbed some scissors from the kitchen and snipped out the pictures of the unfaithful man and his mistress from the newspaper.
After yesterday's endless rain, the sun was finally out, filling the air with a fresh, warm embrace. Stuck in this place with nothing to do but eat and sleep, Selena often found solace in tending to the flowers. Back when she lived in the countryside, she'd helped her grandmother with the garden, so she was pretty handy with plants.
But today, she was a bit out of it. While watering the flowers, she didn't notice someone approaching and accidentally bumped into them, drenching them with water.
Snapping back to reality, Selena started apologizing, "I'm so... sorry..."
Before she could finish, she sensed something off about the man in front of her. Dressed in plain farmer's clothes, his head down, cap pulled low, he was a stranger. The villa had two gardeners she knew well, and this wasn't one of them!
Having faced danger before, Selena's instincts kicked in. Her heart raced, and she took a step back, ready to call for help-
"Hel-Mmph..."
The man quickly covered her mouth, careful not to alert the bodyguards, and pulled Selena behind a large tree, out of sight from the cameras.
As Selena began to struggle, he whispered urgently, "Selena, don't be afraid, it's Callum!"
His voice was slightly altered.
Dr. Campbell!!
Selena looked up, eyes meeting his. Callum lifted his cap just a bit, and even though a mask covered most of his face, leaving only a pair of gentle eyes visible, she knew it was him.
She had left a note by a gravestone in the cemetery asking Dr. Campbell for help. Now, here he was, the person she trusted most. She hadn't expected such a quick reply, det alone a personal visit.
Her heart, thoroughly battered and chilled by Everett's betrayal, felt a warm rush of hope. They couldn't linger here long. Callum had found it tough to sheak in; the security was tighter than they'd thought. He'd nearly been caught several times, and it was only because Everett was absent that he managed to slip in. Otherwise, the place was locked down tight.
So, he got straight to it. "Selena, I'm making arrangements, but we need a bit more time to get everything set. Can you hang in there a little longer, please?"
