Revenge of the Scorned Witch

Chapter 6 — Duplicity

Knowing that I had Ellis where I wanted him, I started to notice how he treated Kaylee and Laura. I never dreamed he would be more controlling to them than he had been to me. Neither of them could leave the house without the other, and he had to approve everything they wore. I knew it was time to put things into action, so while I was at my café, I made a phone call to a dear friend of mine who is an FBI agent that I had gotten to know while I was living in California. He is also an openly gay man. Well, knowing full well how Ellis feels about gay men, it's going to really bug him that Bryan will be staying with me for a couple of weeks to help me out. When I step out of my office and see three of my children working and happy, I know what I am doing is the right thing. Preston has taken to his role as manager perfectly. I don't have to do a lot while I'm here except make out the paychecks. It would be nice to have all my children working for me, but my oldest son, Jake, works at a store in Ardmore and is doing good for himself.

On Friday morning, I head out with Kaylee to the Will Rogers World Airport to pick up Bryan. When Kaylee saw him coming off the plane, her jaw dropped to the floor. Here was this big muscled-up man who looked like a model coming over to us.

"Hey, girlfriend," Bryan says as he walks over to where we are standing. "It's been just too long, and who is this doll?" He asks, looking at Kaylee.

"I'm Kaylee, nice to meet you." She says sweetly with a hint of a giggle in her voice. Bryan shook her hand, then looked up at me with a knowing look on his face. He knew who Kaylee was because he had seen many pictures of her while he was training me to fight..

"Well, before we go, I have to go to the boy's room." He announced. Kaylee turns to look at me with a shocked look on her face.

"What's wrong?" I ask her.

"Seriously, how can a guy look like that and be gay?" She says with a pout. "That's just so wrong."

I just shake my head at her and say, "I don't know, Kaylee, I guess it's one of God's cruel jokes." I laugh.

When we get into the car to head back home, Kaylee starts what sounds like an interrogation of Bryan, who doesn't seem to really mind.

"So what kind of work do you do, Bryan?" Kaylee starts with her questioning. Bryan looks over at me. He knows not to tell anyone what his real job is.

"I'm unemployed right now. I'm staying with your friend Joy here to see if I can find something, then I might move out here." He answers her.

"How did you meet Joy?" She asks.

"Umm, she worked at the same place as I did." He answered swiftly.

Kaylee kept up with her many different questions until we made it to Ardmore, where she finally ran out of questions, even though I was surprised she didn't ask him the question she had asked me in the airport lobby. I guess she was satisfied with my answer. I glance in the rearview mirror to see that Kaylee had fallen asleep. Bryan also seemed to notice that she was asleep, so he began to speak freely.

"She is a smart one. I'm surprised she hasn't discovered that you're her mom yet."

"I know it's hard for me not to tell the children every day who I really am, but it's for the best right now," I tell him.

"I get it, but come on, your daughters would probably keep your secret, and if not, what's the harm in it?" He says.

"The harm in it, Bryan, is that this man thinks he can control not just women but his daughters and teach his son to hate people because they're not like him. Come on, he kicked his own son out because he told him that he was gay. You of all people should know how that feels. No, Ellis is going to get some payback." I said hotly.

"Ok, ok, calm down. You know I'm behind you one hundred percent." Bryan stated. We continued driving in silence when we heard a little sniffle from the backseat. Bryan turned around and seen that Kaylee was awake with tears streaming down her face. He looked over at me and motioned for me to pull over. We both turn in our seats to look at my teary-eyed girl.

"Hunny, what's wrong?" I ask quietly.

"You really weren't going to tell me that you were my mom?" Kaylee exclaimed.

"Oh no, you heard?" I mumbled. "Hunny, listen, if you heard that, then you heard my reason for why I was going to wait."

"Yes, I did, but I can keep your secret. You know what the hell dad has been putting Laura and me through." She stated hotly.

"Yes, she does know what you and your sister are going and have been through, that's why she is doing all of this, along with asking for my help. Kaylee, I'm not unemployed. I work with the FBI. I met your mom back in California, and we became great friends. She helped me out of a bad place while in return I taught her how to fight." Bryan tells her.

"Ok, so you're here to help mom get some kind of revenge on dad?" She asks Bryan.

"That's right, I'm here to help her with whatever she needs me to do." He answers her directly.

"So, are you really gay, or is that an act?" Kaylee asks smartly.

It took a few minutes for Bryan to catch his breath to answer, but finally he says, "Yes, I'm still gay."

We couldn't help but laugh some more with the frown that formed on her face. We finally made it home around noon, so I made us some lunch. As soon as we walked in the door, I knew I wasn't the only one starving. Kaylee promised she would keep my secret before she headed home. After that, I set Bryan up in one of my guest rooms, then caught him up on everything that I had done so far. He even went so far as to congratulate me on putting Amanda in jail. Later that evening, he helped me make dinner before everyone showed up, granted not a lot of help is needed for a pot roast.

At five-thirty, everyone had shown up. Ellis sits at the head of the table with Bryan sitting at the other end, just staring at each other. Kaylee is sitting across from me with a nervous look on her face.

Preston and Laura just look around with questioning looks on their faces. All of a sudden, Ellis breaks the silence, "So, Bryan, what do you do for a job back in California?"

"Well, I worked as a nurse until they laid me off, so my dear friend Joy said I could find some work out here," Bryan said tartly.

"Well, isn't that a fitting job for someone like you," Ellis says rudely.

"Ellis, stop being rude, and let's enjoy our supper." I jump in hotly.

We finish our meal in complete silence, then when everyone was done, the girls and I clean up the kitchen while the guys go to the living room. Bryan sits down on one end of the couch, and all of a sudden, Ellis jumps up and sits in one of the chairs.

I couldn't hold back my laughter after I hear Bryan pop off, "Trust me, dude, you're not my type!" My laughter or Bryan's comment set Ellis into a rage. He yelled for the girls and Preston, then sent them out the door. He turned back to me. "I can't believe you think it's funny for this fag to talk to me like that. For one thing, no girlfriend of mine is going to be friends with one, let alone have one in her house!" He yelled.

It was all I could do to stand there with a look of calm on my face and say, "Ellis, you need to leave my house at once. When you calm down, then you are welcome back."

He glared at me then stomped out the door, leaving the door wide open for the cold air to rush in. Bryan jumped up to go shut it for me, then walked over to me and put me in one of his big bear hugs, which seemed to always calm me down. I finally gather my thoughts and run into the bedroom to get my laptop so I can see what's going on next door. At about the same time I pull up the live feed, I hear a knock at the door. Bryan thankfully looks out the peephole, then opens the door. It was no surprise that my two daughters were standing there.

"Come in, it's cold out. What on earth are your two doing here? Your dad will be pissed." I exclaim.

"Dad is throwing stuff around. It's not safe there right now. Besides, you have something that you need to tell Laura, don't you?" Kaylee says matter of factly. She stands there eyeing me until I finally give in and have them sit down. I tell them the whole story and what my plans were for their dad.

"So you're my mom? You look different from what I remember." Laura says softly.

"I had work done so nobody would notice me, mainly so your dad wouldn't notice me," I say. Finally, it seemed that both of my daughters were on my side.
