Chapter 91 Countless Debts
Veda definitely noticed Scarlett was hiding something, but she didn't really care. Both she and Michael were grown-ups.
Some family stuff was better left unsaid; no need to air out all the dirty laundry.
Still, Veda was genuinely ticked off by Scarlett's constant bad attitude towards her.
Veda snapped, "You always scold me, and that's why Grandpa dislikes me so much! So what if I have dinner with him and put on a show for a night? If Emily gets a tiny scratch, all the men in the Brown family feel so sorry for her! And me? Everything I do is wrong, and I still get scolded by you! And you? You said you'd take care of Emily for me, but what now? You failed, didn't you? Can you get back the money you spent?"
Scarlett felt that if this kept up, Veda would spill the beans before Emily even had a chance.
Thinking of this, Scarlett quickly got up and shut the windows and doors tight.
She then remembered her room was far from Mason's bedroom and felt relieved, glaring at Veda.
"What do you know? My plans never fail. Today didn't go as planned, but do you see me scared? And that Emily, she has a mouth. Why doesn't she report me to Michael?"
Veda glanced sideways at the inexplicably confident Scarlett and said helplessly, "It's just that she has no evidence."
Scarlett happily took off her face mask, poured the essence onto her face, and carefully tended to her smooth skin.
"How could she not? I even went to the guest room to see her today. As long as she confronts Michael, he'll immediately know I'm lying!" Scarlett said.
"Then how did you dare?" Although Veda was usually very smart, at times like this, her mind just couldn't wrap around it.
In other words, though she had a sharp tongue, she ultimately wasn't as malicious as Scarlett.
The sinister tricks Scarlett could think of were beyond Veda's imagination.
"The plan didn't work out, but I'm in a good mood today. I'll teach you another trick: find the key point."
What did that mean?
Veda had always been a poor student.
"How stupid! Find the weakness. Everyone has a weakness, especially those poor lower-class people! Lack of money is their weakness! Emily's weakness is her bedridden mother. As long as we control her mother, Emily will have no choice but to comply!"
With that, a trace of malice flashed in Scarlett's eyes.
The night was quiet but felt exceptionally long. Emily leaned against the car window, watching the nightscape of Emerald City whiz by, her mind blank.
Michael, sitting next to her, stayed silent.
Sophia made over a dozen calls until Michael's phone died and turned off.
Unwilling to give up, Sophia started calling Andrew.
Receiving a signal from Michael, Andrew also hung up and turned off his phone.
Sophia thought, 'What are they up to, not answering calls all night?'
Unable to contain her curiosity, Sophia drove through the night, heading to Emerald Lake Manor.
"Mr. Smith, I'll be heading back now." After dropping Michael and Emily off at Emerald Lake Manor, Andrew and the driver left.
The two hadn't had such a quiet moment alone in a long time.
Michael felt uneasy, especially seeing Emily so quiet. He kept replaying the scene in the guest room at the old mansion, feeling a constant ache in his heart.
"You didn't have dinner, did you? Want me to make you some pasta?"
This was a rare moment of tenderness from Michael.
But Emily's response left him stunned. "Michael, let's get a divorce. I'm begging you."
"You're so desperate to divorce me that you're begging?" Michael clenched his fists, veins bulging on the back of his hands.
"Yes, I'm begging you. Let's get a divorce, the sooner the better."
With that, Emily turned to go upstairs. Michael, at a loss, didn't want to just silently acquiesce to her. So he forcefully pulled Emily into his arms, demanding, "Is it because of what happened today?"
He added, "I told you, I'll give you an explanation. You can't possibly think Grandpa meant to harm you, right? He loves you more than he loves me!"
Tears instantly welled up in Emily's eyes. She bit her lip, her voice trembling as she responded to Michael. "Michael, how could you think of me like that! Do you know that if it weren't for Grandpa, I couldn't have lasted a single day with you!" Indeed, how could she suspect Mason?
She knew it was all Scarlett, but the frustrating part was that Scarlett had covered her tracks so well that Emily had no way to fight back and might even be falsely accused. After all, she had accepted Scarlett's money to pay for her mother's medical treatment.
Thinking of this, Emily's tears flowed uncontrollably, her heart aching.
At the same time, Michael, feeling her pain, also began to hurt. He didn't know if it was because of Emily's words or her insistence on divorce. In any case, it was all because of Emily.
"We can't divorce yet. Your medical bills, your living expenses, and all your bank cards are funded by the Smith family. Emily, you must return all the money to me before I consider divorcing you!" Michael said.
The usually domineering CEO was used to having a tough exterior to mask his vulnerability.
So even his request sounded like a command to collect a debt.
But once spoken, words were like spilled water; they couldn't be taken back.
Michael didn't expect that what Emily cared most about now was the entangled debts with the Smith family.
It was because of her limited abilities and Isabella's urgent medical needs that she had fallen step by step into Scarlett's trap, almost losing her innocence and her child.
At this moment of regret, Michael's words were like a sharp knife, stabbing right into Emily's heart.
"Money, right?" Emily suddenly laughed, tears streaming down her cheeks. She seemed to have lost her mind.
"Michael, I really didn't misjudge you. You're a businessman; all you care about is your money, your reputation, your profit! Fine, draft an IOU tomorrow, list every penny I've spent in the past three years, and I promise to pay it all back! Then we'll divorce and never see each other again, ever!"
With that, Emily ran upstairs, leaving Michael standing there alone.
And at that moment, Sophia arrived.
She had been eavesdropping outside the door and was overjoyed. After waiting for so long, they were finally going to get divorced!
