Chapter 792
Milo took the earliest flight to Brookville, but even then, he was still a step behind Charles.
Since the hospital was a private one, it was not easy for Milo to see Janet. He considered calling the police, but doing so would only anger Charles.
Once the police were involved, there would be no way to keep things under wraps. Milo had no choice but to seek out Charles directly, but Charles refused to meet him. Left with no other options, Milo tried to reach out to Clarisse. However, Clarisse was practically under house arrest by the Hoffmans. Although she was treated well with good food and accommodations at the hospital, her movements were restricted.
She could not make any outgoing phone calls. After several unsuccessful attempts to meet her, Milo decided to go straight to the Hoffman residence.
At the Hoffman residence, only Maxwell and Henry were present. Milo had come with the intention of seeing Mateo, his brother-in-law, knowing that Mateo still had feelings for Clarisse. Yet much to his disappointment, Mateo was not there.
"Well, well, it's our in-law. Bring tea!" Maxwell called out. The Hoffmans still maintained their formalities despite the fact that their relationship with the Bakers had soured over the years. Maxwell still made sure to keep up appearances.
Due to health reasons, Nancy remained upstairs, leaving only Maxwell and Henry downstairs.
Both of them were known for their sharp tempers, and Milo was fully aware that this conversation would not be easy. He lacked confidence going into it.
"So, you've come to take Madam Baker and Ms. Baker back, haven't you?" Maxwell's first words instantly made Milo stiffen.
Milo forced a smile. "Sir Hoffman, what are you saying? Clarisse married Mateo, and as such, she's a part of the Hoffmans now. The Hoffman residence is her home."
Milo might be the head of the Bakers, but in front of Maxwell, he was just a junior.
Every word he said had to be carefully considered. Maxwell's words were a clear dig at the Bakers' prior behavior.
Milo knew that the Bakers had not handled things properly, but after so many years of silent acceptance from the Hoffmans, he had not thought it would be an issue en FindNovel
"Actually, I came here today to ask a favor."
"Oh? What kind of problem could you have, dear in-law?" Maxwell glanced at Henry. "You and Henry are from the same generation. If there's anything, just tell Henry Though he may no longer be in
charge, he was once the head of the Hoffmans."
Maxwell's comment caused another slight shift in Milo's expression.
"Sir Hoffman, you're right. It's not a big deal, really. It's just that my daughter, Janet, has been staying here for a while, and I feel bad about it.
"Her grandfather has been missing her terribly and asked me to bring her back home. I came without giving notice, and I hope it's not an inconvenience..."
"Don't you know?" Maxwell feigned
surprise. "Your little Janet has been ill and is in the hospital. Her aunt is with her, at the hospital owned by
that Smith boy. Henry helped get her admitted. Didn't you see her there?"
QUMS
Maxwell was playing dumb, pretending not to understand the gravity of the situation.
No matter how Milo tried to phrase things, Maxwell kept up the act, acting like a clueless old man who knew nothing.
As Milo prepared to leave, he made one last attempt to bond with Maxwell. However, Maxwell, being the hard-headed man he was, was impossible to sway.
No matter what Milo said, he found no opening with Maxwell.
