Chapter Seven
Roman's POV
"Kaylee and man is she something. I promise you brother there isn't another woman like her"
"How's that then?"
"For a start she's a demon." Judging by the look on Kai's face, he knew I'd be shocked. Our family were classed as pure blood due to our great-great grandmother being the moon goddess. Never in a million years had I imagined one of us being mated to anything other than a wolf. Though come to think of it, that witch did say my mate was different. I just didn't know how and prayed each and every night that I wouldn't have to reject her. Which again confused me. Kai was more prejudice than anyone I knew. He had the same beliefs as our father who had come to hate any other species due to what his mother had done in the past. Our father Axel's mother wasn't just a witch but the high priestess. Apparently, she was batshit crazy and wanted to have Layla sacrificed when she was born until she found out she wouldn't hold any special gifts because of her birth mother's treachery. It was then that she set her eyes on our mother who had been pregnant with me at the time.
"Fuck. What did our parents say?"
"Well as expected one of our fathers went apeshit. He started going on about how our family was descended from gods and that we weren't to entwine our bloodlines with something so un-pure so cold and evil as a demon, though I think he forgets his mother was a witch, and an evil one at that. Mum, well she's trying to get over the initial shock and is forcing herself to at least try and get along with Kaylee. Shen doesn't want to judge a book by its cover so to speak. Layla on the other hand is getting on with her like a house on fire."
"Fuck off. Layla hates everyone" And she did. There wasn't a day that went by growing up that she wasn't getting into fights that both Kai and I would have to finish. If they didn't start over who her birth mother was, they started because she caused them. We both love our older sister, but goddess does she have a mouth on her. Fortunately, over the last few years she has calmed down. The Gemstone Pack giving her once chance to prove herself has thankfully kept her grounded.
"Doesn't she just. Layla and Kaylee got into a fight within twenty minutes of being in the same room the day they met. Mum and dad to separate them. Which let me tell you was hilarious. Layla knocked mum to the ground only for Kaylee to shimmer over and help her up. Which actually kind of helped settle things. For now, at least." Maybe sticking around for a few days wouldn't be so bad, not if this kind of entertainment was going on. "Well dinner is in five so maybe we should head over. You know how mum gets when we're late."
"Yeh the last thing I need is her on my case. Has she said anything to you about me finding my mate?"
"That you're wasting your time. Look I don't want to say it, but..."
"Then don't Kai"
"Maybe she's right Roman. If this girl has gone through extreme lengths like this to evade you, maybe it's time you give up on the hunt. Take a chosen mate and settle down. You aren't getting any younger and at this rate you are going to spend all your best years chasing a ghost"
"I'm not giving up, and Balthazar wouldn't let me even if I wanted to. She's mine and I will find her."
"Forget I said anything ok. I know your not staying long and I don't want to spend that time fighting with you"

"Already have, now come on I'm starving" As we left Kai's office, I was jumped. One pair of arms went around my neck their legs wrapped round my waist as they pulled backwards trying to floor me. Another gripped my leg making it hard to
move.
"Got you Uncle Roman" I laughed at the twin's attempt. Caleb and Tobias had just turned ten. They were the eldest of Layla's brood. I remember her telling mum she was pregnant and remember dad wanting to cut the balls off the boy that impregnated his sixteen-year-old daughter. Not one of us thought he would stick around, but as luck would have it, he ended up being her mate. Lewis is a good guy and even though he became a dad in his early years he had done a good job in helping Layla raise them while she conducts her Alpha duties. "Submit Uncle Roman we have you"
"Nice try boys, but I can still move... just" I laughed as I felt their little bodies tense. Each of them strengthening their grip as I raised my leg walking towards the door at the end of the hallway. If you could call it walking that is. "Boys get off and let him go" I could hear Layla's voice as she raised it over the other pack members that were chatting amongst themselves.
"OH" the twins groaned in unison as they obey their mother's order. One thing I could say about my sister was that even though she had five kids', she ran a tight ship. Hugging the boys before they took their seats at the table Layla came up and hugged me.
"Good to see you Roman"

"You to sis" Layla led me to the table where my parents were waiting. Mum stood from her chair, tears in her eyes as she embraced me. I had missed her as much as I'd hate to admit it. I know we spoke all the time, but to actually see her... let's just say you couldn't beat it.
After chatting with my parents, we tucked into our dinner. Mum had the kitchen staff make steak with all the trimmings. She even had the peppercorn sauce made. As we were about to finish desert Kai's eyes fogged over meaning he was mind linking. I watched as his face twisted with anger, his hand fisting as his knuckles turned white.
"Sorry guys I've got to go. A group of rogues have been spotted running through the woods." Kai stood from the table and turned to me. "What do you say Roman, want to hunt a rogue?" Nodding my head, I followed him out of the pack house. Together we ran to the packs border where we met up with his wolfs on watch duty. Having determined there were four wolves we took our leave. Ten minutes into the dark damp woods I smelt something alluring. Coconut with a hint of spice, the most mouth-watering scent. Stepping away from my brother I followed the scent until it became stronger, and I knew what it was.
'Mate' Balthazar growled in my head. Could this be what the witch meant by her being different? Was it because she was a rogue?
Suddenly her scent grew weaker, the coppery scent of blood becoming more dominant. Using my enhanced hearing I could hear the sounds of fighting in the distance until I heard her name.
"Cleo look out" The sound of a girl's blood curdling scream left my blood running cold as fear began to take over. Balthazar wasted no time in shifting knowing something was happening to our mate. Rushing further into the forests the sight before me had my anger level getting dangerously high. A grey wolf had its teeth sank into the leg of a rusty coloured wolf with another on her back. A wolf I knew instantly was my mate. Balthazar let out an almighty roar that had the ground and trees shaking. As I emerged from the tree line both wolves released her before running towards me. A brown wolf came up to my side trying to sink its teeth into me, but I was quicker than him. As I turned my claws caught his throat slicing it deeply. The wolf fell lifeless to the ground as its blood pooled round him. The grey one stood off at the side, he was clearly in charge and for what I had seen I would be keeping him alive. For now, anyway. It took me all of a few a minutes to deal with the remaining rogues. As I went to shift back, my brother ran into the clearing. Sending him a mind link he nodded his head. I watched as he shifted back one of his men handing him some shorts before he knocked the grey wolf unconscious. Kai and his men carried him and the other injured girl away knowing I would deal with him and question her when I returned. Shifting back, I made my way to the rusty wolf, the blood coating her fur being both hers and theirs sent fire racing through my veins. It took a lot of strength to keep from burning this entire place to the ground. My mate was a fighter that much was clear, I just hoped she wouldn't fight me.
"Shift back" I ordered using the slightest of the alpha tone. I watched as her fur retreated leaving fair skin covered in claw and teeth marks. She would need to be seen by the pack doctor to ensure she hadn't caught any infections, and to check she hadn't been raped. Male rogues could be vicious, especially if they found two young girls. Kneeling beside her I moved some of her red hair that covered half her face. As my finger touched her cheek, I knew I was right. The sparks I felt were evident she was my mate. Placing my arms gently underneath her, I picked her up and carried her back to the pack house. Her eyes fluttered as she went in and out of consciousness, her bright green eyes reflecting the moons light. She was beautiful, her skin flawless apart from her wounds. That's when it dawned on me. No matter what or who she turned out to be, I wouldn't reject her.
